Authentic
Movement - Essays by Mary Starks Whitehouse, Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow
Book Profile -- An exploration of the
unconscious through movement. The basic concepts of Authentic Movement are
expressed for the first time in one volume through interviews and
conversations with these important figures, and their key papers. They
emphasize the importance of movement as a means of communication,
particularly unconscious or 'authentic' movement, emerging when the
individual has a deep, self-sensing awareness – an attitude of 'inner
listening'. Such movement can trigger powerful images, feelings and
kinesthetic sensations arising from the depths of our stored childhood
memories or connecting our inner selves to the transcendent.

National Dance Institute
- National Dance Institute was founded in the belief that the arts have a
unique power to engage children and motivate them toward excellence. Each
year, the programs of NDI inspire thousands of children, reaching across
social, ethnic, and economic boundaries and including children facing physical
and emotional challenges. Using professional artists and a distinctive
combination of dance classes, perform nces, and educational materials, NDI
fosters a love of the
arts, a pride of achievement, and a curiosity about the world in all the
children that it touches. Children develop discipline, a standard of
excellence, and a belief in themselves
that will carry over into all aspects of their lives. Excellent program
founded by Jacques D'Amboise. The website does offer an overview and basic
information as well as some information on affiliate programs. It would be
great though if the website also included more photos and information on the
program's methodology.
Dance Companies and Resources for
People who are Blind or Low-visioned
Touchdown
Dance - "Where the blind and sighted move together"
Touchdown movement training is based in a pleasurable, free-flowing dance form
known as contact improvisation. it is sometimes called an art sport because it
combines gymnastic and poetic qualities, a healing art - because it promotes
physical and mental well-being. It is a movement form uniquely suited to blind
and deaf/blind people because it is based in the sense of touch. The dance
emerges from paying attention to sensations on the surface of the skin and
inside the body as you move in physical contact with a partner. This is
a simple text-based website that offers only an overview of the program and a
telephone contact number in the 510 area code.
